Course Reserves Print Page

SWC faculty have the option to place course materials (textbooks, videos, articles, etc.) in the library for students to use on a limited basis, with the library's Course Reserves service. Items placed on Course Reserve are normally in-library use only for a limited amount of time (typically 1-hour checkout), as the material is high-use, intended for quick lookups and/or photocopying.

To find out if an item is on Course Reserve, you may search the Library's Catalog. You may search by the title of the item, by course or by instructor. Students write down the call number for the item and request it at the Course Reserve counter.

If you need to find out which textbooks are required for your classes, you may search through the campus bookstore.

For Faculty

Guidelines for Placing Material on Reserve

Why Use Reserves?

Reserve items are placed in a closed stack area and are given shorter check-out periods so that everyone in your class gets a chance to use them.

What Can I Put on Reserve?

Almost anything you'd like your students to read can be placed on reserve. The reserve collection includes library books as well as instructors' own copies, photocopies of articles and pamphlets.

How Do I Place an Item on Reserve?

If you'd like to place an item on reserve, we need your cooperation in the following ways: Check the Library Catalog to see if the book is in our library collection. If so, bring it to the Course Reserve Counter and completely fill out the top portion of the " Reserve Request" form for each separate title.

Please allow a three day lead time for our Reserve Department to process reserve materials.

If you wish to place personal copies of books or articles on reserve, bring your personal copies to the Course Reserve Counter and fill out the top portion of the "Reserve Request" form. Your personal copy will be returned to you when it is removed from Reserve status. Note that the Library is not responsible for the replacement of personal copies that are lost, stolen, delinquent or damaged by students.

How Long Can Reserve Items Be Checked Out?

You determine the loan period when you place an item on reserve for your class. There are four options:

  • One hour (Library Use Only)
  • One day
  • Three day
  • Seven day

Informing Your Students

Check the Library Catalog or call Circulation Services, 619-421-6700 ext. 6397, to verify the status of your reserve items before telling students that the items are on reserve. Students become understandably frustrated when they make a special trip to the library only to discover that something you've told them is in the library is not there.

Give students the correct citation (author and title) for the items. If possible, include the call number on your reading list or handout so that each student individually doesn't have to look up the number.

Please inform students that they must bring their current student ID with them to the library in order to use reserve items.

Thanks for your help in making the Reserve collection work for all your students. If you have any questions, please contact Circulation Services at 619 421-6700 ext. 6397.
